How to Reinforce Welded Wire Mesh
Generally, when a concrete slab or foundation is poured, rebar is set inside the framing to reinforce the concrete. Welded Wire Mesh is also used, allowing flexibility and for the pour to better surround the mesh. It also allows for more shallow pours, cutting down substantially on cost. However, for certain projects, such as driveways, welded wire mesh should be reinforced to better support the weight of parked cars.
1 Roll out the first layer of welded mesh wire between the concrete lumber forms. This and each successive layer of welded wire mesh should be at least 2 to 3 inches short of the inside of the forms. This will keep the mesh from rusting and causing unsightly stains to "bleed" out to the edge of the slab.
2 Lay down the second layer of welded wire mesh off-center of the first. This should create a pattern between the two mesh layers; the layers should not be "centered-up" or "aligned" but form a grid.
3 Fasten the two welded wire mesh layers together using tie wire, twisting the ties in place using linesman pliers. Go along the outer edges of each side, fastening the two layers together until all sides have been fastened together.
4 Slip wire mesh supports under the two layers to raise the wire mesh off the ground to better reinforce the slab. This must be done last rather than first; the mesh has to be laid out to see where the supports will be needed. Place these supports every 4 feet or the distance recommended by the manufacturer.
5 Pour your concrete driveway or slab and screed it to even the surface. Float the concrete surface to smooth it out. Finish by brooming sand onto the surface to prevent slippage when wet. Allow to dry for 72 hours or more before use.
